Transcending Trash Talk On Marriage – Part 1

“Why is Tony Abbott stopping Australia becoming a more modern nation and why doesn’t he trust his own members of his own team to exercise a conscience vote?”
Bill Shorten, Federal Labor Party Leader regarding Tony Abbott’s support of natural marriage, 2015.

“I have this to say to Tony Abbott, the problem with you mate isn’t that you’re stuck in the past, it’s that you want the rest of Australia to go back and keep you company.”
Anthony Albanese.

“Australia is now the only developed, English-speaking country that doesn’t allow same-sex couples to marry.”
“If there was any doubt that marriage equality was inevitable in Australia, the Irish vote has removed it. The question is not if but when … Australia’s political leaders have no more excuses for dragging the chain.”
Rodney Croome, Australian Marriage Equality National Convenor.

“Why Australia is so far behind the times on same-sex marriage?”
“More than 20 countries have now legalised same-sex marriage. Ireland’s recent constitutional referendum vote in favour makes Australia look particularly backward in comparison with most other developed, English-speaking countries. Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom…”
Carol Johnson, Professor of Politics, University of Adelaide.

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9

As they loudly, proudly and intolerantly bully down any discussion about the importance of sex and marriage, never forget that it is all trash talk. Trash talk is “insulting or boastful speech intended to demoralize or humiliate a sporting opponent.”
But it is just that, talk. There is no substance behind it, nor is it new or original. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find the template and solution for it in the Bible. After all, there is nothing new under the sun.

A Time Of Distress

Trapped within their own city, it was a distressing time for the citizens of Jerusalem. Sennacherib had laid siege to their city. Proclaiming himself to be the King of the Universe and Assyria, he was a force to be reckoned with. Having waged war with Arabs in the northern Arabian deserts , the kingdoms of Anatolia and the Babylonians, he was even responsible for the destruction of Babylon in 689 BC. Now he was devouring the Kingdom of Judah.

He had destroyed 46 fortified cities in Judah, the last being Lachish, their second most important city in 701 BC. Accounts of its inhabitants being thrown over the ramparts, impaled, having their throats cut, being skinned alive or led away captive undoubtedly plagued the minds of those in Jerusalem – “We are now surrounded, trapped and threaten by those who did that.”

The following challenge issued to their king, Hezekiah would have been particularly chilling…

The Curse Of Culture

“It seems truth is not what Aboriginal units in universities are interested in but, rather, ideology and popular opinion expressed through social media. This does not help in the cause we fight for.”
“It is becoming worse as the thought police and the politically correct brigade are more interested in denying facts and truths in a selfish and self-righteous attempt to elevate their own moral standing. Well, they are not elevating their moral standing, they are suffocating the victims further.”

This is true of all issues tainted by such interference, not just indigenous domestic violence and abuse as discussed in the article from which the above quotes come from. Other issues which are victim to this include abortion, the proper role and importance of sex and the definition of marriage.

“This is how it has always been done” and ”Get with the times, this is how we do it in 2016/these days” are utterances of a lazy mind. And such laziness simply will not do for culture, something we all live and die under. The real question we should be asking is should it be done this way? Continue Reading →

Defy The Age

“One of the dumbest thing’s I’ve ever read.”

So posted “hojoojoh” as a comment to one of the articles on this website.
I replied, “Hi hojoojoh – thanks for stopping by. I’m curious, why did you write the above?” No reply.
Not surprising. Often, such comments lack not only the style but also the substance and endurance to undergo a civil conversation.

Parental Ferocity

Further to my post about parental instincts and the things which harm the vulnerable, take a look at the following picture:

shauncunningham

It’s a picture of Shaun Cunningham saving his son’s face from a high flying baseball bat. It’s gone viral on social media, being hailed as the “Dad-reflex” and “the most heroic play of the game.”

“Everyone else is moving away from the bat, except for the father, who is moving towards it. The picture is an echo of eternity, a shadow of the divine.”

Transcending Troubles

There’s a line of thought doing the rounds and it goes like this…

“Come to Jesus, lose your problems! Jesus makes all things new and you can claim your heart’s desires in prayer. It’s all about becoming a newer and better you!”

Therefore, if you run into those worldly throwbacks of evil or suffering, there must be something wrong with your relationship with God.

This, in a nutshell is the “prosperity gospel” or “positive confession theology”. Otherwise known as the “name it and claim it”, “blab it and grab it” or “health and wealth” gospel.
As opposed to “The Gospel”. There’s a hint there. Continue Reading →

Mother Bear

Mother-Bear
Verb: To dominate or completely kick a task or person’s ass.
Best used when accompanied by a swipe of the hand and shake of head. Growl recommended.

The above comes from the Urban Dictionary. Since becoming a parent, I’ve grown to appreciate the sentiment expressed. It actually originates from the extremely protective and violent tendencies of a mother bear whenever her young is under perceived or real danger.

And it’s actually biblical. It is used in Proverbs as a measure of an extremity… Continue Reading →

A Loving God And Evil

“How can a loving God allow such evil and suffering?” This very real, pointed and anguished question is not a matter of if, but when. It’s a question which touches us all and only varies in the severity we personally experience it.

It’s certainly not a new question..

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
Epicurus, third century Greek philosopher

Christmas!

theadorationofmagirubensGod’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours. Look no further than Christmas.

For all that plagues humanity and creation, God choose to penetrate from the Supernatural into the Natural. But not in all His fullness and glory but as an utterly helpless baby. And yet that’s exactly what will still our swords and move our praises.

Wishing you all the joy, blessing, peace and awe of Christmas. Hosanna In The Highest!

Foundations and Philosophy

Discussing philosophy may not be your cup of tea but you are actually serving up cups of it all the time. So how well are you doing it?
Consider the following…

…a teenager may say to her father at the dinner table one evening, “Dad, my social studies teacher told us today that sexuality is basically just a cultural thing and that each culture has established its own terms of right and wrong. Is that true?” What if the father were to say to her, “No, the Bible says there are clear laws that God has put in place for what he intended sex to be.” She may well hesitate and respond, “But my teacher does not believe the Bible.”

The father is right in dealing with the problem for himself, but he puts his daughter in the untenable position of positing a conclusion without defending her source of authority. If the teacher were to name the Bible as the authority, then the issue would be simpler. But if the Bible is denied this place, the father has sent his daughter into the lions’ den with nothing to defend her.

How would you deal with the above? Try it now.
Would you like to do better in giving the reason for the hope that is in you? If so, I encourage you to work through the following from Ravi Zacharias. As one commentator cheekily said, “Whatever Ravi Zacharias writes, God reads.” So let’s go…
