Abortion – A Submission

God is the source of all that is good and sound. So it’s unsurprising that when one rebels against Him, one becomes illogical and despotic.

A Queensland Parliament committee is currently receiving submissions for some poorly thought out and undemocratic amendments to Abortion law. Below is my submission to it.
I publish it to encourage you to send in your own submission* and to sustain my opening points….

*to help reject this like the last time this was attempted (submissions must be in by 4PM, Thursday 6th of October 2016). If you live in Queensland, you can also sign a new petition for this one here (by 13-2-2017).

Dear Committee,

Thank you for the opportunity to send in a submission on “Health (Abortion Law Reform) Amendment Bill 2016”.

Clearly, our thoughts and laws are conflicted when only a set of opinions determine if one is convicted or endorsed for artificially terminating a pregnancy.
This bill proposes to confound this situation further by legalising artificial termination at all stages of pregnancy. This is illustrated by asking why one should arbitrarily draw the line at birth once termination is possible all the way up to that point. The application of this logic is seen in the thoughts of Peter Singer (professor of Bioethics at Princeton University) when he proposed legalising infanticide up to 1 month after birth (Practical Ethics, 2nd edition, Cambridge, 1993). Lacking a logical foundation to restrict it, this bill faces us down the path for infanticide.

Secondly, this bill’s proposal to establish “safe zones” around abortion facilities is one which is unworthy of a democratic society such as ours given this amendment’s incompatibility with freedom of expression.

Given the above, I and 23,869 petitioners* who have previously signed against such amendments respectfully and strongly urge you reject these amendments in the interest of our women, pre-born babies and democracy.

Regards,
Dr Kevin Tam

Please also be on the look out for another petition on this numbered 2633-16.

Update: the first e-petition (2586) gathered 23,869 signatures. The second (2633) upstaged the first as the biggest e-petition in the Queensland Parliament’s history with 31,735 signatures. A grand total of 55,604 standing for the dignity and safety of mothers and children.
