South Korea – birthplace of K-Pop, KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) and now “dopamine sites“. These are sites which let you shop for $12,500 handbags and $34,500 watches for free. How? They’re fake recreations of the entire ritual of online shopping.
You go through the motions and get your “retail therapy dopamine hit” without actually buying anything. You can even order food without any of it being made and delivered.
Sounds like a waste of time but it’s an opportunity to sit back and think – what do we ourselves do that’s like that? That next video, that next level in the game, that next rung on the corporate ladder…not bad in themselves but remember to keep it real – there are eternities at stake.
“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory
“Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and devouring insect destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and devouring insect do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.”
Jesus, Matthew 6:19-20
“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because it had been founded on rock.”
Jesus, Matthew 7:24–25
