Many Apologists

The humour of the rather tongue-in-cheek “Turned Believer Recipe (How to Make An Atheist)” is blunted by the tragedy of this truth: At least half and possibly over two-thirds of Christian young people will step away from the Christian faith while attending a non-Christian college or university. And that’s no counting the reasons “Why The Next Generations Won’t Go To Church“.

So here’s the question – what are you going to do about it?

This echoes the observations of…

“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6

To be able to train someone, you must master what you are going to train them in…

“but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,”
1 Peter 3:15

You’ll note that the Apostle Peter wrote this to everyone who has the hope in them. If you have God’s hope, you should be ready with God’s reasons.

My hope is that this blog helps you build your personal bank of reasons for the hope that is in you. More importantly, I hope that you will share them.
Like the Apostle Paul, I have aimed to do so as a “tent maker”. Whilst he spent much time, blood, sweat and tears proclaiming the beauty of the Christian world view (the discipline of apologetics), he did not derive his income from it. Therein is the opportunity for us all.

Whilst many of us may not ever lead an international or national apologetics organisation, we are called to be “Tent Maker Apologists” where ever we are.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.
Mark 12:30-31

Firstly, you’re an apologist to yourself. If you’re not convinced, no one else will be, including your children. That’s why Jesus tells us that the point of life is not only to love God with all your heart, soul and strength but also your mind. Then and only then can you be an apologist to your family, friends, church, community, nation and nations.

This interesting article outlines the advantages of being a tent maker. Specifically, Tent Making Christian Case Makers (apologists)…
…Personify the Christian Life
…Have An Immediate Impact
…Expand the Apologetics Community
…Benefit From Their Passion
…Are Accessible to Laypeople
…Reach a Skeptical Audience
…Can Change the Church Culture
…Maximize Their Focus
…Thrive in Any Economy
…Survive in Any Political Climate

Start now where you are and who knows where God will lead you? He did so for many people around the world who run apologetic websites who are not “trained” to. These people do so whilst doing other jobs as their primary vocation and their backgrounds are varied:

  • Insurance Underwriter
  • Truck Driver
  • Pest Control Specialist
  • High School Teacher
  • Stay At Home Mom
  • Student
  • Railroad Conductor
  • Art Director
  • Postal Carrier
  • Military Pilot and Flight Instructor

In other words, however and where ever you do it, just do it. God wants you to. The world needs you to.
