Language is the infrastructure for thought.
It’s the foundation, the scaffolding of assumptions upon which we build and apply our view of the world and how it works.
With that in mind, here are two thoughts on the matter:
Revolting (adjective): causing intense disgust; disgusting.
What’s interesting about the above is the verb form of it:
Revolt (verb): take violent action against an established government or ruler; rebel. Refuse to acknowledge someone or something as having authority.
Here’s the insight – one can only find something wrong, disturbing or disgusting if one senses that a standard or authority has been violated, rebelled or revolted against. So if there is no standard to be rebelled against, then nothing is inherently revolting or wrong.
I Timothy 4:1-2
Sin is the violation of purpose and herein is the root of our problem. If culture assumes there is no design, no purpose or point to life, that life is just an accident of time plus matter plus space plus energy plus chance, then nothing is inherently wrong or revolting and anything is permissible.
God has planted a delicate small voice of conscience in each of us. Certain situations will stir our conscience to recognise revolt but repeated experience to them will be the hot iron which sears away that voice.
Violating The Good
And here’s the second thought on this matter, this time in Mandarin:
好 (adjective, “Hǎo”): Good; right; excellent.
What’s interesting about the above are the radicals or characters which make it up:
女 (“Nǔ”): woman, female
子 (“Zǐ”): child, offspring
In other words, good is a woman having a child. This is wisdom embedded in the foundations of an ancient language. This is why abortion is revolting – it is a violation of purpose, a rebellion against design. But like all such revolts, repeat a lie often enough and it will have the appearance of truth.
