Unpleasant Grace

My son has been potty trained for some time but accidents do happen. Especially when you’ve got an upset tummy and you’re a bit tired.

So there I was cleaning him up but this time the sleepy grumps were nagging him. He wasn’t his usual cooperative self, wriggling away on the change table with the dire threat of further mess.

So I said to him, “Nathaniel, work with me, I need to clean you up.” More wriggles. “Come on, settle down. I’m sure this is far less pleasant for me than it is for you.”

Exactly.” I sensed my Heavenly Father saying. But to be exact, saying that of me.

“Ok, point taken” I thought. Again.

Confronting sin is never pleasant but particularly so for God Who is Holy.

Come now, and let us reason together,
Says the Lord,
Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
You shall eat the good of the land;
But if you refuse and rebel,
You shall be devoured by the sword”;
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
Isaiah 1:18-20

  1. If you are willing and obedient….very important to note that we can be obedient without being willing. This is not good. Willingness speaks of our attitude whilst obedience speaks of our actions. You can have one without the other…but having both together makes all the difference. God is definitely more concerned with our attitude than with how we behave.

    • Thanks for the important reminder that obedience and willingness are indeed two different things. Thanks for sharing your insight!
