Clear Thinking And Action – Marriage

“Listen, my child, to the instruction from your father, and do not forsake the teaching from your mother.
For they will be like an elegant garland on your head, and like pendants around your neck.”
Proverbs 1:8-9

But what if that instruction and law is wrong? Instead of being things which enrich you, they become burdens which mar you.

So it is with decisions that are based on little more than sound bites and we’ve recently seen how destructive that can be. It’s particularly destructive when such faulty logic is bought to bear on the laws of a nation, especially with regards to marriage. It mars not only the individuals who think it but whole cultures and future generations since marriage is about stability, children and freedom. For those in Australia, it’s time to act on this.

Pester Power

..“In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected people. There was also a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but later on he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor have regard for people, yet because this widow keeps on bothering me, I will give her justice, or in the end she will wear me out by her unending pleas.’
Luke 18:2-5

Some children have it worked out. They know that if they keep persisting (pestering) their parent for something, they’ll get it. This is known as pester power and because it’s biblical, it works. Stated in the opposite, you get the saying, “Winners Turn Up”.

In a democracy, we all have a special voice in the shaping of our futures, for better or for worse. That’s why it is so important to let yours be heard, particularly when a few influencers at the top say your voice is irrelevant.
I encourage you to keep your eyes out for important issues and don’t just think about them, engage in them. We all have a circle of influence – start with those closest to you, then reach out to the policy makers. Explain the importance of going beyond the sound bites when considering laws which will affect the future of the country they are seeking to serve.

The opening verse spoke of listening to instruction. This also has the meaning of “training” or “discipline”, a fortitude of mind and will. It speaks of persistence.

We are trusted to never tire of doing good but let’s not forget, there are those who never tire of doing bad.

This is the case with a multitude of culture shaping issues and right now, it is especially the case with marriage. Previous attempts at redefining it have been knocked back but they keep trying. Therefore, so should we.

Get Engaged

For those in Australia, this is your chance to be counted. For this current round of discussion, please consider using this tool to voice your opinion. Voice your opinion in however long or short a form you wish but do please voice it. We live in a democracy, your voice will make a difference – it has in the past .
Those who seek redefinition are counting on a lack of opposition to push their agenda through – please don’t let them.

To help you help them, below is the message I sent. I would however encourage you to use your own words and not just send a template reply.
Thanks for adding your voice to this and do encourage others to do the same. It takes All Of Us.

Dear {MEMBER_NAME},

Thank you for your service to our community as a member of parliament.
I note there is discussion with regards to the definition of marriage. Further to that, I offer the following for your consideration.

Marriage is a proven key fabric in the stability and prosperity of our civilisation.

Every society has an interest in encouraging mothers and fathers to raise their own children together. This is highlighted by the following excerpt from “Marriage from a Child’s Perspective”, a Child Trends Research Brief – ‘Research clearly demonstrates that family structure matters for children, and the family structure that helps the most is a family headed by two biological parents in a low conflict marriage’

Changing the definition of marriage to accommodate same-sex couples logically implies that being raised by their own mother and father does not matter to children or society. Reality demonstrates it does matter.
Australia apologised to the Stolen Generation in 2008 for the forced removal of Indigenous children from their parents. Please do not undo that good work by legislating to steal parents from future generations.

It is not discrimination to treat something that is unique in a unique way, and marriage as currently defined is uniquely pro-child. Please note that there are children of same-sex couples who are campaigning against the redefinition of marriage as evidenced by this open letter from them supporting homosexual fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana’s stance against marriage redefinition: http://askthebigot.com/2015/03/16/dear-dolce-gabbana-a-letter-of-support-from-children-of-gays-and-lesbians/

If we as a nation are wanting to redefine marriage, then we must be open to all other redefinition variants eg: polygamous, incestuous, minors etc. To not do so is to be logically incoherent if one is seeking marriage redefinition.
Indeed, legalising such definitions is being discussed in jurisdictions where gender redefinition has occurred. Furthermore, there are increasing instances of freedom of conscience violations following marriage redefinition despite assurances this would not occur. Please refer to the following instances for consideration:

http://www.thenewamerican.com/culture/faith-and-morals/item/19318-houston-mayor-backpedals-on-subpoenas-of-pastors-sermons

Despite assertions that a redefinition is supported, in 39 US state referenda, 51.5 million people voted to support man-woman marriage with the recent Irish referendum having only 1.7 million voting to change it (with only about 60% of the population voting).
Redefining marriage is not a high priority in the community. Parliamentary time and resources are finite and should be devoted to issues of greater priority.

The current government was elected on a platform which supported natural marriage – there is no mandate to redefine it.

Given the above, please steward your privilege as a member of parliament to affirm the natural definition of marriage and do not support any redefinition of it.
Thank you for carefully considering this important issue, one which is all about societal stability, children and freedom.
