50 Shades Of Old

With the publicity blitz which is 50 Shades of Grey, it’s hard to ignore it even if one wanted to (and should). So here’s a thought on it: it’s nothing new.
Here are 5 old thoughts to show that…

  1. Trying to look like the latest appealing thing, it’s simply bad mutton dressed as good lamb.

“That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.”
    Ecclesiastes 1:9

    Or put another way…

“All new news is old news happening to new people.”
    Malcolm Muggeridge

  2. It’s fiction in more ways than one, falsely advertising toxic goods as good…

“In reality nothing is so beautiful as good; nothing so continually fresh and surprising; so full of perpetual ecstasy; nothing so monotonous and boring as evil. With fantasy good becomes monotonous, boring and dull and flat. Fictional evil becomes varied, intriguing, attractive and full of charm.”
    Simone Weil

  3. Getting the book or going to see the movie is sending a price signal which supports it with your dollars ie: don’t. Go support something more positive.
  4. If this is the best we can do with our gift of free speech, it’s little wonder some question the value of the concept.
  5. Finally, let’s always dwell on that’s good…

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”
    Phillipians 4:8

And since this isn’t, let’s leave it at this and be done with it.
