Did You Know?

NativityMilk. There are very few things which will distract my son from it but I just found one of them. While feeding him his beloved beverage, I was listening to “Mary, Did You Know?” Uncharacteristically, it stopped him in his tracks. He even looked like he was thinking about some of its profound lyrics like…

“This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you”

“When you kiss your little baby, you’ve kissed the face of God.”

“This sleeping child you’re holding is The Great I Am.”

What can I say? The boy has good taste.

I had heard an earlier version of this song years ago and was struck by the beauty and profundity of it. My wife recently showed me a new version of it. More importantly, she showed me the flesh and blood manifestation of this in our son. I was particularly moved by the song as I made a new connection with its lyrics while feeding our son. I had always marveled at how the depths of God’s love drove Him to be so vulnerable, to enter His creation as a helpless baby. Listening to this song while feeding my son who can’t even hold the thing which he needs to survive drove the point home anew.

God gives us children to teach us. In this Christmas season, this was another lesson.

Another reminder of the glory of songs which worship with both the heart and mind. Enjoy and be amazed anew…

“Mary did you know that your baby boy will some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When your kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God.

Oh Mary did you know

The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of The Lamb.

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding is The Great I Am.”
