Prayer and Potty Training

Prayer and Potty Training, bet you’ve never heard those two in the same sentence. Let me explain: I’ve been reading about how it’s possible to train a baby to be continent in the first few months of life. Boxes of nappies and some mess later, I was clearly motivated to find out how.

It’s done through the phenomena of Operand Conditioning. Firstly, as a parent I need to work out the patterns and cues of when my son will be eliminating his waste. Armed with that knowledge and some experience, I hopefully get to a stage where I can preempt or at the very least, witness him in the act. Then, I use a specific word or sound each and every time he’s eliminating. The aim is for him to learn that that sound represents that act. From there, it’s onto Continence Glory.

“Likewise the Spirit also helps our weakness: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Romans 8:26

Many consider the concept of tongues in prayer at the very least strange and at the very worse, dangerous. In many ways however, this simply another example of Supernatural Phenomena mirrored in the Natural. At first, the baby hasn’t the foggiest idea what parent is meaning or doing by the sounds s/he makes. With maturity and experience however, the child eventually gets the idea that those are not meaningless sounds but ones from a higher level of thinking and functioning.

So it is with tongues, be it on a deeper level. As important as achieving continence is, there’s a greater importance and potential in achieving a deeper level of prayer. At first it may not seem so but like potty training, maturity and experience shows it is the door to greater things.
