The Supernatural In The Natural 4

It’s 4am, what some people call “The Wee Hours” of the morning. I always wondered why they call it that. Now I’m thinking, perhaps that’s because it’s when wee little people like my newborn son are out and about wanting a feed.
Or perhaps because such hours involve nappy changes. Whatever the reason, it’s what we’re up to right now.

Help

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Romans 8:26

Here’s the challenge being a newborn: your needs are basic and when you have them, you know there’s something wrong but don’t know exactly why and can’t express it, let alone address it. Your parents insist on babbling in a language you don’t understand, not that you really understand the concept of language to start with.

Then, there are the solutions for your problem. Your limited insight makes it hard to appreciate that they are solutions.
Take immunisation. There you were all happy, then suddenly, the painful experience of an injection is inflicted upon you. There’s no way you can understand it is for your own good, even if you had the language to be told about antigens, antibodies and cell-mediated responses.

My experience with my son this morning makes this point. He hates a soiled nappy. Hates it.
You can prick him to test his blood, immunise him or divide his tongue tie but don’t you dare leave him in a soiled nappy. Here’s the thing – he doesn’t like the nappy change solution either.
Same dilemma if only on a different level of severity.

Trust

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

My son is learning that his parents are on the look out for him, even if it may not seem or feel like it at the time. As a newborn, he can only see up to about 30cm so he has to trust we are around, even if he can’t see us. He also has to trust in our ability to see further than him both visually and in our future plans for him.
Ultimately, it’s the same lesson we all have to learn moment by moment everyday as we go through experiences which deepen our trust in Our Heavenly Father, even if circumstances seem otherwise and especially if it involves trusting that He sees the end from the beginning.

I always said the real adults are the ones who have kids. Such lessons are obviously God’s way of practically teaching us some supernatural principles through immediate natural experiences.
There are many more to come I’m sure 🙂
